A standard men's Olympic barbell is a nominal 45 lb, and an IWF competition bar is 20 kg — which is 44.09 lb, not 45. Those two get used interchangeably in conversation and they are nearly a pound apart, which compounds every time you add a plate. Women's competition bars are 15 kg, and specialty bars — trap, safety squat, EZ curl, Smith carriages — are not standardised between makers at all. Where a rulebook fixes a weight we cite the rulebook; where it does not, the figure is a nominal size and we say so.

Subtract the bar from your target and halve what is left — that is the weight per side. So 225 lb on a 45 lb bar is 180 lb across both sleeves, or 90 lb a side, which is two 45s. The plate math calculator does this for the set of plates you actually own and loads heaviest plate first. If the total you asked for cannot be built from your plates, it tells you the nearest number that can be, rather than rounding silently and letting you write down a weight you never lifted.

They are estimates, and we show four published equations separately instead of blending them into one house number, because the equations genuinely disagree with each other. They agree closely at low reps and diverge as the rep count climbs, so a max estimated from a heavy triple is far more useful than one estimated from a set of twelve. Treat the result as a programming input for picking working weights, not as a number to go and chase under the bar.
